Facebook suspends 200 apps from its platform

Facebook has suspended as many as 200 apps from its platform


on Monday as part of their ongoing investigation into the misuse of private data of users.

According to the sources AFP, the investigation was launched soon after the political consulting firm Cambridge Analytica revealed data breach. Reportedly the data of 87 million Facebook users were hijacked during the Donald Trump’s 2016 presidential campaign.
According to the Facebook’s Vice President Partnerships Ime Archibong, “The investigation is being conducted in a full swing.”



We have large teams in place working hard to investigate these apps as quickly as possible, the teams consist of internal and external experts, he added. We have already investigated thousands of the apps out of which 200 apps have been suspended.

These apps are now gone under thorough investigation in order to find out whether these apps were involved and could be held responsible for any data misuse.

Facebook is expected to provide further details about the apps and their status after going through a complete overhaul. If anything shady comes across Facebook might ban those apps on their platform and launch legal proceedings against the companies.

Review: Vivo V7 Plus, a phablet made for selfie lovers

Vivo entered the growing smartphone market in Pakistan with the launch of its flagship device Vivo V7 Plus earlier this month.

The Chinese company sent in a testing device for the review purpose. Before proceeding with our review, here are the specs:
Vivo’s latest flagship device is nearly a 6-inch phablet with narrow bezels and a FullView display with 84.4% screen to the body ratio. The one we received was in Matte Black  colour. The phone is powered by a 1.8GHz octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 450 along with 4GB RAM, 64GB of internal storage with the option of an expandable memory of up to 256GB via microSD card.
V7 Plus is equipped with a 24-megapixel front camera with group selfie and portrait mode along with a 16-megapixel rear camera. Vivo’s latest flagship device runs on customised Funtouch OS 3.2 which is based on Android’s Nougat 7.1.

The smartphone is available in the market for Rs 35,999.
Design and user interface
Normally, when you think about a device with a 5.9-inch screen, you would expect a huge device that some people might get difficulty in holding it. Vivo has been able to fit a near 6” FullView display on comparatively a smaller V7 Plus body owing to near its bezel-less design and 18:9 aspect ratio. The phone is just 7.7mm thick and weighs 160gm, therefore, it doesn’t really feel bulky.

While the device large FullView display is perfect for watching videos and playing games, the 1,440 x 720 screen resolution along with pixel density of just 269ppi is a let down.

V7 Plus has plastic back cover but it’s premium finish give the impression of metal back.
On the bottom of the device, you have the 3.5mm headphone slot, Micro-USB port and a speaker grille. Vivo’s decision to stick with the micro-USB port instead of going for USB-C type is questionable as more and more of the smartphone makers are opting for USB-C.

On right side of the device you have power button and volume rocker, while the SIM slot is placed on left. V7 Plus is a dual-SIM phone and has a dedicated slot for microSD card so you won’t have to trade off between using two SIMs and having extendable memory.

Vivo’s latest flagship device runs on customised Funtouch OS 3.2 which is based on Android’s Nougat 7.1. The User Interface (UI) looks inspired from Apple’s mobile operating system iOS. The UI also has a Control Centre which can be brought on screen by swiping up from the bottom of the screen and is customisable.
Camera
Vivo’s V7 Plus, equipped with what the company calls ‘World’s first 24 Megapixel Selfie camera’ with f/2.0 aperture, lives up to its promise of helping you take ‘clearer selfie’. Though it has a front flash, the camera is capable of taking great photos in low light without even using the flash.

If you are one of those people who love to take selfies with their friends and families, then V7 Plus’ panoramic wide-angle selfie feature got you covered. You can take wider selfies by simply moving the phone. Beside these features, you also get the usual beauty mode that is even available for video calls in addition to Portrait Mode.


Back camera of the phone is of 16MP and has an aperture of f2.0. Vivo has added bunch of features to the camera including Ultra HD, Professional Mode which lets you control exposure, white balance etc. One of the interesting camera features is Live Photo option, it records a few seconds of video with the image. Just ‘tap and hold’ to play it. This might sounds familiar because it is similar iPhone’s Live Photos feature.

Hardware and performance
V7 Plus is powered by Snapdragon 450 processor with Cortex-A53 CPU and Qualcomm’s own Adreno 506 GPU along with 4GB of RAM and 64gigs of internal storage which is expandable up to 256GB via microSD card. During the testing, we didn’t face any problem switching between apps and playing games.
However, Vivo’s decision to go with an Snapdragon 450 processor is a let down as considering the price tag of Rs35,999 the device should have come with at least Snapdragon’s better processors like 625.
Powered by a non-removable 3225 mAh lithium-ion battery, the device is guaranteed to get an average user through out the day with an average of 25-30 per cent battery life left.
Biometric security
Vivo V7 Plus comes equipped with fingerprint sensor, which has become one of the key security features in mid-range devices. The sensor is placed on the back of the device just under the back camera.
Once setup, the fingerprint sensor is the quickest way to unlock your phone. You can also use it to take selfies.

Verdict
All in all, Vivo V7 Plus lives up to its reputation as a selfie phone. While Vivo’s decision to go with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 450 and low pixel density of 269ppi is a let down, the device’s 24 megapixel wide-angle front camera capable of taking clear pictures in even low light conditions makes it a device for those who love to up their selfie game.

This might be LG's best Smartphone yet

The latest Android smartphone is the LG V30, a high-end handset in every sense: It features a dual camera setup, class-leading processor, and an edge-to-edge OLED display. But LG focused primarily on the video and audio experiences with its latest flagship, to deliver one of the most impressive mobile entertainment packages we’ve seen in years.

Sleek design and display


The V30 has been heavily inspired by the design of the LG G6. It features a similar “bezel-less” screen, with rounded corners bordering the display, and the same orientation of the dual cameras and fingerprint sensor around back. The sides are glass, which doesn’t help with durability but the phone does look more polished than last year’s metallic LG V20.

The six-inch screen features an 18:9 aspect ratio with a resolution of 2,880 × 1,440, just like the G6 — although it differs in one significant way. Whereas the G6’s panel was LCD, the V30’s is OLED. It is a new direction for LG and in line with the way the industry is heading, thanks to the technology’s ability to provide more vivid colors, perfect blacks, and dynamically conserve battery.

It is also a departure from a trend established in previous V-series devices — the second display. Unlike the V20 and the V10 before it, the V30 does not have a “ticker” above the primary screen, beside the front-facing camera. The full-face display negates the need for it, the company claims and it replaced the shortcuts and action previously stored there with a software solution — a floating quick actions bar that can be revealed or hidden at any time.
Flagship specs and class-leading audio

Beneath the glass, you will find a phone that, internally speaking, shares much with other leading Android smartphones. The V30 carries Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 835 system-on-chip, paired with 4GB of RAM. The base model offers 64GB of internal storage, though you can expand it thanks to a MicroSD slot. The battery weighs in at 3,300mAh, which is about average for its class, and there’s support for wireless charging.

One of the ways the V30 differentiates itself is in its audio system. Similar to last year’s V20, LG has fitted the V30 with an upgraded 32-bit Quad DAC system for richer, more accurate sound. We loved what we heard from the phone’s predecessor, and LG is the only mainstream manufacturer really innovating the listening experience in this way, so we hope the implementation is spot-on once again. The phone will also stream high-resolution audio in a way that conserves more data.

Sadly, the V30 won’t follow the V20’s footsteps to be the first smartphone to launch with the latest version of Android. You won’t find Android 8.0 Oreo on the V30, but Android 7.1.2 instead. LG has confirmed it is already working on bringing the update to the V30 shortly after the phone launches. LG does have its own theme over Android, and you’ll see some new special features like Voice Imprint, which lets you unlock your phone with a pre-selected voice phrase; and a facial recognition feature lets you unlock the V30 with your face. Google Assistant is also on-board, and LG has worked with the search giant to offer commands tied to the cameras that only work on the V30.
Promising dual cameras


Alongside the audio experience, LG invested a great deal of effort into improving the V20’s already strong camera. The V30 utilizes a similar pairing of a standard and wide-angle lens, with the former rated at 16 megapixels and the latter at 13. But the new device goes a few steps further, with a f/1.6 aperture and f/1.9 apertures, respectively. The bigger aperture will allow more light into shots, which should especially improve images captured in dark environments. LG said it should also help reduce distortion with the wide-angle lens. At the front, there is a five-megapixel wide-angle shooter for selfies.

LG also implemented a new technology with the V30 known as Point and Zoom. Simply tap an object on the screen and a slider will appear, allowing you to close in on that aspect of the frame first using the wide-angle lens, before switching to the normal one, and then using digital zoom. It should be a handy feature for producing fun videos and blends the V30’s two cameras in a seamless, intuitive way. It works in a new camera mode in the V30 called Cine Video, which offers a number of color graded themes designed around movie genres. These are added to videos before you start filming.
Improved durability

One of the V20’s weak points was its lack of durability. Although it complies with a variety of military standard tests, it isn’t water resistant — putting it at a disadvantage next to the Apple iPhone 7 and Samsung Galaxy S7. Part of that was due to the removable battery and back cover, which has been removed this time around. Sealing the components has allowed the V30 to achieve that IP68 rating. We feel it is a worthy trade-off.

Additionally, the V30 utilizes a combination of Corning’s Gorilla Glass 5 on both sides, and Gorilla Glass 4 over the camera lenses to keep the device scratch and shatter-free. LG also says it improved the handset’s heat management and dispersion — something phone makers do not typically point out, which is an encouraging sign.
Release date and availability

We are still awaiting information from carriers and retailers regarding the V30’s availability and price, and we will update this section as we hear more.

After the V30 is official, customers in South Korea will likely be able to pre-order the phone first. Prior to Thursday’s reveal, Android Authority reported pre-orders would begin in the region on September 15, with the U.S. following on September 17, and then the rest of the world on September 28.

Solar cars begin race across Australian desert

The World Solar Challenge began on Sunday with 42 solar cars crossing Australia’s tropical north to its southern shores, a grueling 3,000 km (1,864 mile) race through the outback.

The race from the northern city of Darwin to the southern city of Adelaide is expected to take a week for most cars, with speeds of 90-100 kmh (55-62 mph) powered only by the sun.
The fastest time was achieved by Japan’s Tokai University in 2009, completing the transcontinetal race in only 29 hours and 49 minutes.
Belgian team Punch Powertrain started first on Sunday after recording a trial time of 2:03.8 for 2.97 km (1.78 miles), hitting an average speed of 83.4 kmh (51.5mph).

But reigning 2015 champions Nuon from Delft University of Technology in the Netherlands believes it has a good chance of retaining the prize.
“All the cars look completely different (this year), and all we know is we’ve got a good car, we’ve got it running perfectly the last couple of days and we’re confident we’re going to do everything to win,” tour manager Sarah Benninkbolt said Sunday.
Race director Chris Selwood said the biennial event has attracted one of the best fields ever, with teams from more than 40 countries.
“This is the 30th anniversary of the Bridgestone World Solar Challenge and competitors want to be part of that. They have been drawn to the challenge of new regulations which reduced the solar array size without limiting the size of the solar car,” Selwood said.
Teams come from countries including the United States, Japan, Germany, Chile, Netherlands, United Kingdom, Malaysia, Belgium, Sweden, Iran, South Korea, India, Hong Kong, South Africa, Poland, Thailand, Turkey, Canada, Taiwan and Australia.
The Northern Territory Minister for Tourism and Culture, Lauren Moss said her government’s A$250,000 (US$194,150) sponsorship of the race showed it was committed to achieving 50 percent renewable energy for the territory by 2030.
“Innovation is at the heart of the event and the technology showcased this year will influence continuing solar innovation for vehicles and householders in the future,” she said.
“This event is a great promotion for the NT – it shows our ability to innovate to the world.”

Every iPhone X sold will make Samsung a lot of money

Apple’s latest iPhone launch certainly matched expectations as the tech giant finally launched a device that was different from its predecessors.

The launch of the iPhone X gave Apple a much-needed boost but they aren’t the sole beneficiary of the new device.
Their greatest competitor Samsung also stands to benefit from iPhone X’s popularity particularly the OLED display as the South Korean giant is the exclusive supplier of the display along with the phone’s memory chips.
According to a report, Samsung is estimated to earn about $110 on every iPhone X sold. The analysis carried out by Counterpoint technology Market research for the Wall Street Journal shockingly revealed that Samsung will earn about $4 billion more in revenue making parts for the iPhone X than it will by making components for its own Galaxy S8 device.

The disparity is quite surprising given the neck and neck competition they give to each other.
Samsung makes about $202 per Galaxy S8 sold from components alone, according to Counterpoint. The business analysis firm projects sales of about 50 million units over the next 20 months, which adds up to about $10.1 billion in revenue. Meanwhile, the iPhone X could make Samsung $14.3 billion during the same period.
Samsung’s good fortune is down to the prices it was able to negotiate for its OLED displays with the company reportedly charging Apple about $120 to $130 per display panel, according to a report from trusted Apple source Ming-Chi Kuo.
This price is about $75 higher than what Apple typically pays per display from other suppliers.
Samsung’s reliance on component revenue certainly seems like a smart play as component businesses comprised of 35 per cent of the company’s $195 billion revenue last year.
With Apple solely depending on Samsung and the South Korean giant taking full advantage of that leverage, the only option for Apple is to find alternate supplies for the OLED screens.
They have been rumoured to be exploring screens from LG Display while some claiming Apple might eventually build its own OLED facility.
For now, though, Samsung will reap massive benefits from the iPhone X launch, and the company has the Note 8 on the market, too. When it comes to smartphone sales, Samsung has found itself in a win-win situation.

Negative impact of social media websites on youngsters unchecked: Experts

 Experts on Thursday have warned of negative impact about unchecked access of children to popular social media sites. 
A report aired by a private news channel, a legal expert named Dr. Huma Shaheen said that generations who were brought up spending time with family, neighbors and friends are now engaged with social media web sites.
Dr. Huma believes that this social media dependence is going to grow, but people should be more aware of the negative effects and minimize exposure to these social media platforms.
She said the younger generation believes that friends can be made with a click of a button and deleted just as easily.
In addition, students are attempting to multi-task. They are trying to check various social media sites while they study. This leads to reduced academic performance, she highlighted.
Besides, she also said their ability to concentrate on their task at hand gets significantly reduced due to the distraction that is brought by all these social media sites.
Javed Danish an IT expert added that the other negative effect on students is that they are spending too much time on social sites, and much lesser time on socializing in person.
He further said in fact, there is a lack of body signals besides other nonverbal cues, including tone and inflection in case of social networking sites.
Thus they cannot be considered as an adequate replacement for any face-to-face communication. Not only this, students who are spending a great deal of time on these social networking sites are not able to communicate in person in an effective manner, he mentioned.
He explained that these social media sites have become so popular in such a short time because the information gets published in a fast way.
This has actually created a lax attitude for using proper spelling as well as grammar, said, adding,  the students are unable to write effectively without the aid of the spell check feature of a computer.
Experts suggested this is where teachers and parents need to play a major role by making the students aware of what they are missing out while spending too much time on these sites.
