7 celebrities who've spoken out about dealing with mental illness

October 10, 2017 0
It's tough to talk about your problems but sometimes someone else breaking the ice can help

It might seem that celebrities live the perfect life. They’re talented and widely loved, they've got mansions, fast cars and are always decked in designer goodies.
But that doesn't mean their world is free from mental illness. It's tough to talk about your problems but sometimes someone else breaking the ice can help. More and more celebrities are coming forward and perpetuating a culture of openness that is slowly chipping away at our preconceived notions.
Here are some who've experienced mental health challenges and come out on the other side.

Momina Mustehsan

The singer, who practically became a household name overnight after being featured on Coke Studio alongside Rahat Fateh Ali Khan, took to Instagram last month to open up about a personal struggle which she stated had been plaguing her for a while.
In a three-part video series, the 25-year-old shared, "There was a time in my life where I was very depressed, I had lost all self-esteem. I came to a point where I couldn't even look at myself in the mirror, I had gained weight. When people tell you to just get over it, it's not one thing you're sad about, it's just this feeling. It's not like you feel suddenly sad at 2am at night, it could also be when you're in class in the morning or meeting people. You're smiling on the outside but you feel devastated on the inside."
She also spoke about the scrutiny she had to face being "Pakistan's national crush": "Everything I did was everyone's business. I wasn't expecting it so I fell back into that trap again. I started having anxiety attacks and panic attacks. I would cry myself to sleep every night and wish I could go back in time and get my life back and be a human again instead of a photo op."

However, she reveals that what helped put things into perspective for her was a fortune cookie that read it only gets better when you get better.
"I reread it and I was like oh, that makes sense. The change has to come from within you. Only if you love yourself, only if you're happy with yourself and only if you know your own worth will you ever be happy," revealed Mustehsan.

Nouman Javaid

Earlier this year, singer Nouman Javaid was admitted to the hospital. Some people said he had gotten into a car accident while his Facebook page read that he'd been injured following a gas leak in his bedroom.
However, Nouman took it upon himself to clear the air and was brave enough to admit in an interview that he had actually taken 50 sleeping pills and had tried to end his life because he had been struggling with depression.

That being said, Javaid reassured fans that he was in a better head space following the incident and was working on getting his career back on track.
“Although I am not well, I feel positive about my future.” he added.

Juggun Kazim

In an interview with Dawn three years ago, the actress spoke about the benefits of therapy and said she feels that "people in the industry should go to a psychiatrist at least once a week" just to get things off their chests.
“I've been seriously committed to therapy for two years. I don’t go for therapy because I am schizophrenic or manic depressive or because I have a psychological problem. In fact, I have a minor in psychology which is part of my degree but I go because I feel people in this industry should go to a psychiatrist at least once a week to vent out all that is inside them."
“I tell everyone in the industry to go for therapy just like I go to the gym every day because in this industry you are constantly being analyzed from every angle,” she added.

Deepika Padukone

Possibly Bollywood's biggest female actor at the moment, it can be hard to believe that Padukone too suffered from depression and anxiety.
Just two years ago, the Tamasha leading lady opened up about struggling with mental health challenges. She also took it upon herself to bust a common myth, which is that being depressed is the same as being sad.

"Being sad and being depressed are two different things. Also, people going through depression don’t look so, while someone sad will look sad. The most common reaction is, ‘How can you be depressed? You have everything going for you. You are the supposed number one heroine and have a plush home, car, movies… What else do you want?’ It’s not about what you have or don’t have. People talk about physical fitness, but mental health is equally important." Read her full statement here.

In an article she wrote about holding onto hope, she also said, "There’s absolutely no shame if you suffer from depression. Please don’t hide it, feel angry, think of yourself as weak, or consider it a character flaw. It is not your fault if you are depressed. Acceptance is the first step on the road to recovery. Depression doesn’t discriminate; it can happen to anybody, at any point in their lives. Know that you are not alone, that we are in this together and most importantly that there is hope; for in the words of comedian Stephen Fry, “It will be sunny one day”.

Karan Johar

While chatting with Barkha Dutt on NDTV last year, director/producer Karan Johar revealed that he had been suffering from anxiety and depression and only realised that when he went to the doctor for what he thought was a heart attack.
According to the filmmaker, he was in a meeting a couple of years ago, when he felt like he was going into cardiac arrest – and immediately drove to a doctor, who told him what he was really having was an anxiety attack. He then saw a psychologist, who revealed he’s suffering from depression.
He didn’t want to meet people and found excuses to leave Mumbai: “It was dark, deep and helpless time. There was nothing I could do about it."
“I stopped feeling excitement and happiness. There was lack of sleep and I was always on the edge. I think I hadn’t dealt entirely with the loss of my father. There was also the fear that I won't be able to find my life partner. At 44, when you don’t have a life partner or kids, it's difficult to deal with.”
The Bombay Velvet actor shared some good news as he said he has stopped taking his medication some months ago and had come out of the experience stronger.

Ileana D’Cruz

When collaborating with a denim brand, the Main Tera Hero actress divulged that she had struggled with depression as well as body dysmorphic disorder for 15 years.

“I was a shy, self-conscious person once I hit my teens. I was constantly picked on for my body type. The obsession started when I was 15; my entire life goal was to be accepted by everyone. It's what I wanted the most but I never got it. I was always the wallflower."
"I didn't even know I had a body disorder so when I started off with acting, it just got worse. There was a period, approximately three years ago, where I would go from happy to completely depressed and not knowing what it was," she added. The most comforting thought to me was what if I just end things now? Thankfully, I realized this is not right.”
The 29-year-old then talks about how depression is tricky to understand.
"I never expected to be someone who'd be dealing with anxiety or depression. I've got everything I want and more and you wonder, why are you so depressed? I still don't know sometimes."
"When I was diagnosed with depression and was told that I have a body disorder, there was a sort of acceptance that came with it immediately. That is the biggest step you can take, you can't move forward otherwise. You're not meant to be perfect, you're meant to be flawed."

Ittefaq's bone-chilling trailer is out now

October 05, 2017 0
The film features Sidharth Malhotra, Sonakshi Sinha, Akshaye Khanna in a murder mystery

Sidharth-Sonakshi-Akshaye starrer Ittefaq's trailer released today, and it has us thinking maybe remakes aren't all that bad.
The film is a murder mystery revolving around a double homicide, in which Siddharth and Sonakshi appear to be both victims and culprits, depending on whose version of events you believe.

It's up to Akshaye Khanna's dogged pursuit of the truth to untangle the bloody mess. The film's slick, bone-chilling trailer does full justice to the complicated storyline.
The film already features a triple whammy in terms of acting talent — and what's really got us going is that it's also jointly produced by Karan Johar and Shah Rukh Khan.
We can't wait to see if Ittefaq lives us to the hype when it releases on November 3.

Upcoming play 'Muskh' will be remembered for a long time: Sania Saeed

October 04, 2017 0
Saeed will star with Nimra Bucha in this play about writers

TV and theatre actor Sania Saeed says meaningful theatre has long been marginalised in the country and the theatre groups can perform a number of such plays if given an opportunity.
Referring to the theatre play, Mushk, in which she is acting along Nimra Bucha, she termed the venture an emotional production that would be remembered by the audience for a long time.
She was addressing a press conference along with Ms Bucha at Alhamra Art Centre, The Mall, on Tuesday. The play is an Olomopolo production and it will be performed at Alhamra from Oct 6 to 8.
Ms Saeed described performing in Lahore at the platform of Olomopolo as an absolute gift.
Both the actors talked about the chemistry they developed for Mushk. Ms Bucha said the theme of the play was interesting in which a journalist meets a writer, and added that she was performing in Lahore for the third time.
Kanwal Khoosat of the Olomopolo said their production house was holding four to five major productions annually from different genres of performing arts. She said Mushk was an adaptation of an English play but she did not disclose the name of the play.
“We have made many changes to localise the play,” she said.
Ms Khoosat said that a music video of the play had also been produced which would be released on electronic media. “We have got original music for the play which has been composed by Zainab Jawad,” she added.
Mushk has been written by Raabia Qadir and Seemal Numan and directed by Kanwal Khoosat. After Lahore, the play would be performed in Islamabad and Karachi. In Islamabad, it would be performed at the Pakistan National Council of Arts from Oct 21 to 22 while at the Karachi Arts Council from Nov 3 to 5.

Verna's first teaser is out and boy, is it fierce!

October 03, 2017 0

After her striking Bollywood debut opposite the King Khan himself, Mahira Khan readies for her upcoming Pakistani movies, Fawad Khan and Hamza Ali starrer, Maula Jatt 2 and Shoaib Mansoor-helmed, Verna.

After sharing few glimpses of her look in the movie, Mahira just shared the first teaser of the movie, and boy, it’s breathtaking!
Mahira looks absolutely fierce and seems keen on taking revenge. The song Power Di Game is apt as a soundtrack for the teaser.

The song is sung by Islamabad based rapper Xploymer Dar, originally from crew called Rap Engineers. The song is to have a strong message in it.
“I was called by Shoaib Mansoor himself,” Dar exclusively revealed to The Express Tribune. “We worked on the song together. I initially wrote the song and then Shoaib modified it.
“The experience of working with the legendary director is absolutely surreal. He’s brilliant at what he does. I was actually at ease while he re-wrote the lyrics to my song,” he confessed.

He went on to say, “Rappers are very egoistic when it comes towards our work. We don’t like to change much. But I had complete faith in Shoaib, and it paid off.”
“The song’s title is yet to be decided. You know how privately Shoaib Mansoor works. It’s pretty hard to get anything out of him before he believes the time is right. However, yes, the song is included in the movie and will be revealed soon,” he further added.
Verna is slated to release on November 7 this year.

Juhi Chawla: The making of a Yash Chopra heroine

September 28, 2017 0
Therefore, it was all but expected that Juhi would issue a eulogy of sorts on the occasion of the late director’s fifth death anniversary, which is being observed across India this month. In her heartfelt message, the actor shared some memories she has of ‘Yash ji’ from the course of her career. “I got to work with Yash ji first in the film Chandni, where he gave me the chance to do a guest appearance; it was a lead role opposite Vinod Khanna. It was a very brief appearance but it was a huge film at that time and I was very new in the film industry,” Pinkvilla quoted Juhi as saying. “Then I got to work with him in Aaina. His wife Pam ji and Honey Irani had written the script and they were like the hands-on producers.” Juhi continued, “A year or two later, I got to be signed on to Darr which was Yash ji’s production and direction. It was a huge film for me! I was just making it in the industry and getting somewhere at that time so it was a very big step. Yash ji, again, had called me over, sat me down and gone through the entire story with me.” According to Juhi, this pre-production meeting was the first that she had ever had. “I remember there was no other film that I had ever been told the entire story of. We used to sign the film on the basis of who the lead actor was, which production house was making it and so on. We were told what it might be like in three or four lines. But things were different in Yash ji’s productions,” she recalled. “Now when I look back, I realise they used to work on their script so well and knew what they were making. I wasn’t even a big star at that time but they would sit me down and tell me the entire story so that I knew what I was getting into. Also, I remember that he was open to my comments and would ask ‘What did you think of it?’ That was amazing as I was a very new star and he was a very big producer-director.” Juhi has many fond memories from her days on Darr in particular which she owes to Yash. “I remember in Darr, we were going to shoot in Switzerland and it was a very long schedule of 20-25 days. Yash ji wanted everything ready before hand. Neeta Lulla was doing my clothes and I remember she had to get 30 to 40 outfits ready way before we even left,” she shared. “We were given a room in his house where basic makeup was done and tried on all the outfits, took quick pictures and created a look book so that Yash ji would know exactly what looked like in an outfit. Whatever he didn’t like was not going to be taken – that’s how well he would plan things.” Juhi claimed she had never worked with a more organised production house before Darr. “Today I know everything is very compartmentalised. You have ready scripts and everything is planned out. But back then, it was all free-flowing. Scenes would get written on the sets only” said the veteran heroine. “But in Yash ji’s films was very well planned and beautifully executed.” Of course, there was much more to the legendary film-maker than just his films. “Yash ji was such a wonderful person! Of course, he was very senior so I was always in awe of him but he very warm,” added Juhi. “His sets would have the yummiest foods and all of us used to sit and edit together, whether it was at home or in Switzerland. In fact, I remember for that entire schedule, we were all in one huge chalet…Shah Rukh Khan, myself, Yash ji, Pam ji. The cook had been flown in from India,” she revealed. “In the evenings, we would come back from shooting and get dinner. After that, everybody would sit down in the drawing room where Pam ji would sing and Yash ji would tell us stories from his previous films, etc. It was such a wonderful time,” Juhi remarked. The Gulaab Gang star had yet another anecdote to share about her mentor. “In Chandni I played Vinod ji’s love interest who falls ill and died. We were shooting the death scenes and my character was supposed to be in the hospital so the makeup artist gave me dark circles around my eyes to make me look sallow,” Juhi reminisced. “But Yash ji saw me and said, ‘Nahin, yeh zyada ho gaya hai… kam karo. Heroine hamesha khoobsurat lagni chahiye (This is too much… heroines should always looks beautiful)’.” Thereafter, Juhi always made sure she looked her best in all her films. “His words stayed with me for so long; I learned that heroine must always look good. I took what Yash ji said very seriously and decided that I shall always try to look my best and that’s what I did in all my films afterwards.”

Kumail Nanjiani and John Cena team up for new buddy cop film

September 28, 2017 0
Could this be the next Lethal Weapon?
Kumail Nanjiani is on a roll! After his successful film The Big Sick, Nanjiani has made himself known in Hollywood. Just this week we got word that the actor-comedian will be hosting Saturday Night Live in October. But is that enough? No, it is not. Deadline broke the news that CinemaCon's comedy star of the year is now gearing up for a buddy cop comedy film that has been acquired by Universal. Nanjiani will be starring alongside WWE wrestler and actor John Cena. Could this be the next Lethal Weapon? Will there be a fun catchphrase that will stay with us for a long time? Should we already expect sequels and spin-offs? We really don't see much wrong with that! The yet to be titled project will be helmed by Zombieland director Ruben Fleischer. Fleischer is already on board with directing Venom, a Supervillain movie featuring Tom Hardy. John Cena and Fleishcer have already collaborated before on HBO mockumentary Tour De Pharmacy. Kumail Nanjiani is definitely slaying 2017 and while no plot has been revealed, we can tell from the team that this will be a film to watch out for.

Aamir Khan debuts his crazy new look for Secret Superstar and his crew has a field day

September 28, 2017 0
"It's just... ewww," says his co-star Zaira Wasim
Dangal star Zaira Wasim did not have a lot of words to describe Aamir Khan's look for their upcoming film Secret Superstar, slated to release coming October. "It's just... ewww," Wasim said as she attempted to describe the snug, gaudy T-shirts Shakti Kumar, Aamir's character in the film, wears. His hair is heavily gelled with blonde-ish spikes, wearing earrings and golden chains around his neck. The character is completely opposite to how Aamir Khan is in his personal life. "One of my toughest roles!" Aamir said on a video he posted to his Facebook page. "What is wrong with you?!" cinematographer Anil Mehta exclaimed as he laughed in disbelief looking at Aamir's not-so-sophisticated dressing. "[In reality], he's really simple, basic and organic," writer and director Adyalt Chandan said — which is why his full 'maila' look and behaviour ensued delirium on the sets.

September 27, 2017 0
Though the 2017 list is yet to be completed, so far Momina is the only Pakistani woman to receive the honour
Rising singer and musician Momina Mustehsan has made it to the 2017 list of BBC's 100 inspirational women from around the world. She is also the only Pakistani woman this year to receive the honour. "This year, the women on the list will be part of the 100 Women Challenge, tackling some of the biggest problems facing women around the world," the news outlet reported. Alongside Momina, the list includes women such as the Nasa astronaut Peggy Whitson, President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf of Liberia and England footballer Steph Houghton. Rupi Kaur is also part of the list.
The 25-year-old musician, in her short bio for the Challenge, shared the philosophy she holds dear, and said has most influenced her life "The quote that helped me the most with my life was: It only gets better when you get better," she said, adding that she came across the saying in a fortune cookie in New York when she was binge-eating her way through depression. "That woke me up," she adds. Now in its fifth year, the BBC 100 Women names 100 influential and inspirational women around the world annually. This time around, they are challenging the 100 women "to tackle four of the biggest problems facing women today ─ the glass ceiling, female illiteracy, harassment in public spaces and sexism in sport". Some of the heroes named in the 100 Women list will be asked to innovate real-life solutions in different cities to help the residents affected by these problems. Others will provide support and inspiration from their locations around the globe. They will also have conversations on radio, online and on social media. However, there are 40 spaces in the list that have yet to be filled, it said. "As the season progresses, more women who have taken up the challenge in some way will be added to the list," the statement read, adding the complete list will be released some time coming October.

'Us Rah Par': Coke Studio pays emotional tribute to Junaid Jamshed

September 22, 2017 0
Coke Studio season 10 may have kick-started on a low note, but it surely knows how to finish with a bang. While this year’s renditions of some of the songs didn’t really work out all that well, (case in point: NFAK’S Dam Mast Qalandar) last night’s finale paid a heartfelt tribute to one of the nation’s most beloved icons Junaid Jamshed and it was oh-so-beautiful.
Watch Here:
Ali Hamza and Ali Zafar’s take on JJ’s famous Us Rah Par was all kinds of soulful and I, for one, is still in an absolute awe. Us Rah Par also marked the comeback of Strings and I have to confess, I have missed Bilal Maqsood’s tranquil voice. Written by the master himself, Shoaib Mansoor, the song never fails to give you goosebumps. Hamza and Zafar’s soft notes complimented the song way too well, and Strings joining in was the cherry on the top.

Urdu has always been the language of the heart: Shabana Azmi

September 22, 2017 0

At the launch of Mauj-e- Saraab in New Delhi, a book of Urdu ghazals by Minu Bakshi, Shabana Azmi expressed joy at seeing the younger generation engaging with the Urdu language.

The Bollywood actor said at the event, "Urdu is a language that we all speak on everyday basis. It should not be considered the language of a particular section." And she feels "very happy when I see youngsters participating in festivals like Jashn-e-Rekhta (the three-day annual literary festival which celebrates the Urdu language). They might not be well-versed with the language but they want to learn and listen to Urdu. It gives me hope that this language will stay forever." Mauj-e-Saraab (Waves of Illusion), is a manifestation of the various hues of the pageant of love and passion, as one critic puts it. The book's author said, "Urdu has always been the language of the heart and its foundation rests on the tenets of love. And because the Ghazal as a literary form grew to maturity under the benign protection of sufis, the tendrils of love and passion ventured deep into its medium."
